szimplakert haztaji piacHaving a free Sunday morning on my hands, a friend and I visited the Szimplakert Haztaji Market. The great ambiance was still there. Almost every seller had samples out to try, whether it be szorp, jam, baked goods, spreads or cheese. All the sellers were friendly, chatty, and proud of their products. There was even a guy on stilts making announcements about the children's programme and workshops. I bought some dried tomatoes in oil and lavender szorp from Home Dining. My friend bought some pesto and macskamenta szorp. We tried several of their products but it was very difficult to decide, as they also had chili-cherry jam, vanilla-cherry jam, chutneys... We apple cobbler kovaszos zoldparadicsomspent a lot of time sampling different cheeses, but spent the most time at Mircz Narcisz from Debrecen. He gave us a thorough cheese tasting before we bought several cheeses. I finally found some hard goat cheese, but also bought some nice mature half-hard sheep cheese to go with my apple cobbler (in lieu of sharp cheddar). We also bought some roasted pumpkin seeds again, since although my plan 2 weeks ago was to make bread with them, I ate them instead. My friend also bought some delicious mushroom and eggplant spreads. Along with some organic cherry tomatoes and purple basil from Nyitottkert and some organic whole wheat bread from the same woman I bought olive-onion pogacsa from before, we had quite a brunch on our hands. Complemented by cappuccino from the bar (come on guys, can't you put on a second bartender?!) and running into several friends like Richard and Magda, Logan from CEU Sustainability Group, and John and Karen back from Somaliland, it was another very pleasant Sunday. In the afternoon I made an apple cobbler from my extra apples from the weekend, and also decanted my first kovaszos green tomatoes.
