Stone Soup: Restaurant Review

kolevesI have spent many a summer evening at Koleves Kert, just behind the Koleves Restaurant, but had never been to the restaurant. Last night I finally had a good excuse to try it out. I had been looking for a restaurant with ambiance that could also cater to vegetarians and people with flour and milk allergies. The menu on the webpage looked like it would fit the bill nicely, and a good wine list featuring a few Jackfall wines (Villany) clinched the deal. We both started a bit adventurously with the csicsoka leves (Jerusalem artichoke soup) with walnuts. I knew Jerusalem artichokes to be sweet, almost like a yam, but the soup was quite savoury (needed a bit more salt though), with the walnuts setting it off nicely. It was a very pleasant surprise. For the main course I chose the spinach-ricotta vegetarian lasagne, while my companion ordered the ruccola-goat cheese salad. Both were very good, and we were so stuffed we did not even consider dessert. The wine came with glasses of tap water, and when we asked for a bit more water later they actually brought out a full carafe of tap water for us. And of course, we were still smoke free when we left several pleasant hours later.

I decided on the Jackfall Duett, a middle-range dry red cuvee of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Kékfrankos. It was a bit too cold on serving, and a bit sweet - but after it warmed and opened up it was a pleasant compliment to dinner.  My companion had a nice Zenit, but I did not catch the vineyard.

During the VINCE wine tasting in 2010 I had the opportunity to try a nice selction from Jackfall: Jackfall produces about 40-50000 bottles a year, and is run by the editor of Borigo Magazine.
