Concert Review: Göncölszekér

goncolszekerIt has been more years than I care to admit since the last time I saw Göncölszekér (The Big Dipper) in concert - pure laziness on my part, and my loss. When I last heard them in concert, my Hungarian was not very good, but I still enjoyed the show. I got much more out of it last Saturday at the TEMI Fővárosi Művelődési Háza. Over the years, they have developed the evening to include many more performance aspects. The band members adopted characters for the show and often acted out parts of the poems as they sang. Setting contemporary Hungarian poems to music, the four musicians played about 20 different instruments including accordion, kontra (a three-stringed viola), glockenspiel, whistles, bagpipes, you name it...

It was a very fun evening. I particularly enjoyed Csordás Gábor's "Sanzon" about a couple breaking up, Kántor Péter's "Váci utcán egy Hóember," Szabó T. Anna's  "Állatok," Miklya Zsolt's "Semmise-ének," and Kántor Péter's "Kikötő Blues."
